If you give a woman the opportunity, they’ll do whatever it takes to succeed.
Kelis Parker always knew what she wanted in her career and was ready to fight against the odds to become a Diesel Mechanic.
She was aware that living in Carlton (40 minutes’ drive from Hobart), not having a driver’s licence, and entering a male-dominated trade could be a challenging journey.
When she found out that BEST (Business and Employment Southeast Tasmania Inc.) was looking for a Diesel Mechanic Apprentice, Kelis quickly registered.
BEST was recruiting someone to join Elliots Crane High and selected Kelis as one of the two finalists.
As the two candidates were attending Rosny College, BEST arranged a 1-week work trial covered by the School, and before she knew, Kelis received a job offer.
Our Business Consultant, Kate Massie, helped the employer and the new Apprentice with the sign-up. Kelis has now started her Apprenticeship in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology.
Well done, Kelis! You are an inspiration to all the girls out there who dream about becoming a Tradie.
