Georgina Buick is a student living in Bordertown (SA) who knows what she wants to do after Graduation. Her goal is to work with animals and become a Veterinarian.
She was so eager to gain work experience and learn more about the sector before completing high school that she approached Mas and GTE to find a School-based Traineeship that would suit her.
“This is a very difficult industry to get into and undertake training, as the Certificate 4 Program is too high for young people,” said Tarah Marygold, Mas Business Consultant Team Leader.
The small number of businesses offering part-time work in surgery was another obstacle for Georgina. But, it didn’t stop her from finding an employer that would be willing to take her on as a Trainee. She found an opportunity in the neighbouring town of Naracoorte to join the Rural Veterinary Services Team.
That’s when Tarah and GTE came up with a plan to help Georgina achieve her goal. They signed her up for Certificate II in Rural Operations, a training package created by TAFE to meet Veterinary businesses’ needs.
“The course targets animal handling, nutrition and issuing medication. It allows trainees to gain hands-on experience, giving them the basic skills to assist the vets in appointments and surgery,” said Tarah.
“Georgina is very excited to join the team. Her big smile shows how much she enjoys working one day a week at the clinic.”
